"Reduced Income" Cited 14% More Often by Those Seeking Credit Counseling
Leading nonprofit says "root cause" of debt problems is changing

(Orlando, FL) — In what can only be called a sign of the times for many Americans,
InCharge® Debt Solutions (IDS) says a majority of consumers are now citing “reduced
income” as the main cause of their debt problems. More than 53 percent of those
who contacted IDS in May 2009 hoping to find debt solutions said their problems
stemmed from “reduced income,” an increase of more than 14 percentage points from
the same month one year ago.
“We tend to find that the ‘root causes’ for debt problems are fairly consistent from month-to-month and
year-to-year,” said Etta Money, president of InCharge Debt Solutions. “The fourteen
percentage point jump in those citing ‘reduced income’ is significant because it
says that consumers are still struggling to find income and keep up with their expenses,
while many, too many, are losing the battle
