Summer Camp Teaches Children About Saving Money

University of Florida and credit counseling nonprofit sponsor personal finance camp

Posted on August 26, 2009

(Orlando, FL) — Some lucky Orlando-area teenagers have begun developing vital personal finance skills thanks to the “Moola Venture Money Camp” held in Kissimmee, Florida, July 27-31, 2009. Sponsored by InCharge® Debt Solutions (IDS) and the University of Florida-IFAS Osceola County Extension Service, the camp was designed to teach young people, between the ages of 14 and 18 years old, about budgeting, establishing credit, bank accounts, preparing for job interviews, buying a car, investing money, and making career choices.

“The Moola camps were timed perfectly because of the difficult economic conditions we face in this country,” said Laura Royer of the University of Florida. “We were proud to be a part of teaching young people about being responsible with their money at an early age in the hope that the adults of the future will be better equipped to deal with economic decisions. These children are being raised in an era of easy credit and excessive spending, and it is important to teach them about the responsible use of credit and solid money management before they are faced with financial decisions in the real world.”

The interactive camp included hands-on activities and was presented by IDS’ Certified Credit Counselors, University of Florida faculty, along with other “real world” business professionals.

“We were proud not only to supply the instructors for the camp, but to help each young person open a savings account by giving them their initial $15 deposit,” said Etta W. Money, IDS’ president. “InCharge Debt Solutions intends to expand this program with the University of Florida, and hopefully, build on it with similar offerings for young people in Florida and in other parts of the country as well.”

InCharge Debt Solutions provides free counseling to consumers struggling with excessive debt by analyzing their financial situations and offers educational resources, possible solutions and budgeting assistance.
